APPROACHES TO PSYCHOTHERAPY

Gestalt

I am a Gestalt psychologist, I have problem describing what gestalt is since is an experiential and fenomenological approach, meaning that therapy is an experience rather than just words.

Gestalt therapy is a humanistic, holistic, person-centered form of psychotherapy that is focused on an individual’s present life and challenges rather than delving into past experiences. The past is of the essence, though it is used through presentifying it.  The approach stresses the importance of understanding the context of a person’s life and taking responsibility rather than placing blame.

EMDR

L’EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) therapy is an extensively researched, effective psychotherapy method proven to help people recover from trauma and other distressing life experiences, including PTSD, anxiety, depression and panic disorders. I use it very often also on negative belief about oneself (i.e. “I am not lovable, worthy, etc).

Family constellation

More than a methodology is an attitude to look at the individual, considering the family of origin and understanding fully the importance of attachment and of  the gift of love (thanks to Lorna Smith Benjamin). Looking at a wider picture is possible to understand today’s double binds and difficulties.

Family constellation is actually a method of working (in group is the one that I like) to dramatize family mandates and experience them, in order to see a possible way out from one’s script.

Bodywork

Bodywork is a technique of breath manipulation throughout which is possible to get in touch with one’s deep emotions. I use with those patients who feel blocked in order to ease their flow of consciousness. It’s a powerful technique that must be used only with patients with whom there is a solid therapeutical alliance. I studied Bodywork with Dr. Mazzei in Cagliari during a postgraduate.
